Colorado head coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders, 55, was released from UC Health at the University of Colorado Anschutz on Monday, June 26, three days after receiving emergency surgery to alleviate blood clots in both of his legs according to Sports Illustrated.
This was the first step in a set of procedures to repair multiple hammer toes on his left foot caused by a dislocated toe that went untreated for approximately 15 years.
“I went to the doctors the other day to check myself out and I have two clots in my leg. One in my right leg, one in my left leg in my thigh,” Sanders said. “Now I have a procedure tomorrow to try and get those clots so I can have proper blood flow through the leg so I can fix the toes.”
In 2021, Sanders had two toes on his left foot amputated due to blood clots while coaching at Jackson State.
“It is the tenth surgery for Sanders and second major hospitalization including the initial procedure two years ago to amputate two toes in his left foot,” said Brian Schaible from Sports Illustrated.
Although the possibility of amputation was initially reported, Sanders was quick to post a video to social media to address those concerns.
“There’s no talk of amputation,” Sanders said according to Nick Ferguson. “There’s no talk of any of that whatsoever. The doctor was just telling me the worst comes to worst. That was gonna happen.”
Colorado plays their season opener against TCU on Sept. 2. So far there is no timetable set for Sanders to return to the football field.
